Your first EV road trip: a simple plan

Shorter, more frequent stops, a backup charger for every stop, and arriving at 10 to 20%, not zero.

Long trips in an electric car are mostly about rhythm. Because charging slows as the battery fills, two short stops are often quicker than one long one.

Before you go

  • Plan stops with your car's own planner or a route app, and check the chargers' recent reports in the forum.
  • Pick a backup charger near each stop in case the first one is busy or broken.
  • Install the apps or cards for the networks on your route, and test them before you leave.

On the road

  • Aim to arrive at a charger with 10 to 20% left, and leave once the charging speed drops off, often around 70 to 80%.
  • Let the car precondition the battery on the way to a rapid charger.
  • If a charger fails, note the exact error and post it. It helps the next driver more than a star rating.
