Over-the-air updates and charging: what can change

A software update can change your charging curve, your route planner and how your car talks to chargers.

Many electric cars update their software over the air. Updates can bring faster charging, better battery preconditioning or a smarter route planner. Occasionally they also change how the car behaves with particular chargers.

That is why the Charging Issues form asks for your software version. When several owners report the same fault after the same update, it points to the car rather than the charger, and gives the maker something concrete to fix.

Worth noting after an update

  • The software version, from the car's settings screen.
  • Any change in peak charging power or how quickly it tapers.
  • Chargers that stopped working for you, or started working again.
