Volkswagen is restricting selected UK ID.3, ID.4 and ID.7 cars to an 80% battery charge while it prepares a safety recall. The manufacturer says some high-voltage batteries produced between 2022 and 2025 could overheat when charged beyond that level, creating a fire risk.

Autocar reported on 6 November that about 5,000 UK vehicles fall within the wider Volkswagen Group campaign, which also includes selected ID.Buzz and Cupra Born models.

Volkswagen’s passenger-car campaigns are identified as 93MV and 93MF. Volkswagen says the limit has already been applied remotely in most affected cars. Volkswagen owners whose affected vehicle has not received it must activate Battery Care Mode through the app or infotainment system.

The temporary cap reduces the energy available between charging stops, but DC fast charging remains possible. Volkswagen says affected cars can continue to be used within the 80% limit; a yellow warning lamp requires prompt contact with a Volkswagen retailer.

Owners will receive instructions on the remedy. Some vehicles need a workshop battery inspection and, where necessary, replacement modules; others may receive a software-based solution. Volkswagen puts the battery check at about an hour and says recall work will be free.

The original charging capacity and range are to be restored after the necessary work. Eligibility depends on the particular vehicle and battery, rather than the model name alone.
